The first Creators of Peace Circle in South Sudan ran in Juba over three days in March. The very interactive, wide ranging conversation and the very deep and painful sharing gave lie to those who said the women of South Sudan would find it hard to open up, too traumatised to share.

The beautiful paradise island of Barbados with its Sun, Sea and Sand - but even in 'paradise’ women and girls need to find their own peace potential. Monica Ellis lives part of the year in Barbados and London, and is a member of the UK Creators of Peace team.

A remarkable young teacher, Iman, who had met Creators of Peace and Initiatives of Change when living in Canada, is now back at home in Syria. She is determined to gather groups of women together to share the Peace Circle experience. Jean Brown reports.

Following the training given to women from across the Solomon Islands earlier this year (see story here), 16 women attended the first Creators of Peace Circle 22-23 April 2012, in Niukoloula village, East Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Islands, home of the late Peace Creator, Susan Kukiti. Rachel Abi, one of those newly trained as a facilitator, reports:

In Guatemala, a country that suffered 36 years of civil war, there are many institutions that work for peace, but the need for peace is still very large, and today more than ever. For this reason, with the conviction that peace must first start in the heart of each person, Helena von Arnim (Colombia) and Killy Sánchez (Guatemala) decided to work together to start Creators of Peace Circles in Guatemala, in the hope that they can be multiplied in all Latin American countries in the near future. In April 2012 the first two Peace Circles took place in the cities of Chimaltenango and Panajachel.

Creators of Peace (CoP) is an international women’s initiative started in 1991. It challenges women everywhere to:

  • Share responsibility for their part in the perpetration of conflict and in its resolution
  • Engage in the creation of peace at every level of society
  • Break the chains of hate and revenge
  • Build networks of forgiveness and friendship across racial, religious and social divides.
