Creators of Peace

Living Peace, Creators of Peace, logoThe Creators of Peace (CoP) initiative was launched in 1991 at the Initiatives of Change conference centre in Caux, Switzerland by the Hon Anna Abdallah Msekwa of Tanzania, a respected politician and leader of her country’s women’s organizations. In her inaugural speech, she urged everyone to 'create peace wherever we are, in our hearts, our homes, our workplace and our community. We all pretend that someone else is the stumbling block…Could that someone be myself?'

CoP is now a global network of people working on different continents through Creators of Peace Circles, workshops, personal encounters, community building activities and international conferences - Caux, Switzerland '91 and '94, India 2001, Uganda 2005 and Australia 2009. A delegation attended the UN Women's Conference in Beijing (1995). In 2016, the 25th anniversary of CoP was celebrated in Caux through the 'Living Peace' conference.

In the month of February 2014, two Peace Circles took place in two areas within Nakuru County, Kenya. The issue of searching for inner peace, forgiveness and inner healing remain a highlight in the programme.

Calgary, March 2014—Months of preparation under the guidance of Janyce Konkin, IofC’s Regional Projects Coordinator in Alberta culminated in a women’s Peace Circle organized and led by student interns from the University of Calgary’s Community Service Learning Project. This program finds community partners willing to provide practical experience for these students to complement their course on “Critical Perspectives on Development Practice and Research".

What does peace mean in a country where a people’s revolution has ended in disillusionment, bloodshed and polarisation? The 20 women who took part in Egypt’s first Creators of Peace circles in February came heavily burdened by the events of the last three years, and their effect on their families, friends and relationships.

Iman Al Ghafari

Iman Al Ghafari, English teacher and Creators of Peace Coordinator in Syria, has persistently and consistently worked to keep peace alive in the hearts and lives of those she lives and works with in Damascus. She uses Peace Circles, teaching assignments, informal interactions and courageous initiatives such as taking seven Syrian women on a day trip into Lebanon to expose them to something new.

Peace Circle Brazil

Two new Peace Cirles were formed in Brazil, made up of women from a wide variety of beliefs and walks of life, ranging from women from disadvantaged communities, housewives, and women in jobs including professionals in mental and physical health.

Kate Monkhouse, Treasurer of Creators of Peace (CoP) International and member of CoP UK’s Advisory Group, recently spent 12 days in Burundi, helping to train peace circle facilitators, on the invitation of CoP International President Daphrose Ntarataze.

Nigeria Creators of Peace

Creators of Peace was introduced for the first time in Nigeria in mid September. Two Peace Circles were facilitated in Lagos State by Portia Mosia, an international co-ordinator of Creators of Peace, and Jackie Euvrard. They were invited by the board of MRA/Initiatives of Change Nigeria, co-ordinated by Benedicta Ngozi Opara.

Creators of Peace have continued to spread and transform women and their families and friends in Kenya. In the months of June and July three workshops were facilitated and 50 women and seven men had the opportunity to go the through the ‘simple but transformative’ Creators of Peace Circles process. Every workshop runs for three full days.
