Education for Peace is a programme of Initiatives et Changement, France. The programme works with schools, teaching students how to manage conflict without resorting to violence.
In the years 2005-2006, over 82,000 acts of violence were reported in nearly 8000 public schools in France. And the climate seems to be worsening with increasing verbal agression, insults, racist attacks and vandalism.
The Education for Peace programme takes a long-term approach through interventions in schools which tackle the underlying attitudes behind these diffuse forms of violence.
Far from being confined to so-called 'difficult' schools, the programme is aimed at all young people and addresses the different forms of violence present in an increasing number of educational establishments.
A series of 3-10 presentations: for primary schools, colleges and high-schools.
To raise awareness among youth of the importance of taking individual responsibility and changing behaviour in conflict resolution and violence reduction.
To help students verbalize the various conflicts they experience in their environment and to identify the reasons why each of us can be violent.
To help students understand each other better, to listen and interpret each other's reactions.
To help students formulate alternative ways to resolve conflicts without violence, through listening, dialogue and respect.
Workshops and games: debates, group exercises, plays and skits, setting the scene and raising awareness among young people that peace is a real possibility if each of us cultivates it in our own sphere.
Already more than 300 students educated in two years.
