We learn every day, often without even noticing, yet there are particular times when life teaches us crucial lessons. The COVID-19 pandemic has provided us with deep insights. It has revealed the vulnerability of our globalized and interdependent economy to external shocks; it has opened our eyes to alarming socio-economic injustices across the world; and it has allowed nature to take a deep breath as industries have stopped and airplanes have been grounded.

On a personal and collective level, we have understood that the way we live, work and share burdens and opportunities must change, once and for all. A global economic recession has already begun and risks exacerbating the ongoing climate and social crises. We need to build a resilient and just economy focusing on the wellbeing of people and the planet.

Right from the start of the pandemic, the digital space has emerged as a way of fostering resilience since many aspects of our personal and professional lives could continue online. Initiatives of Change (IofC) demonstrated an extraordinary agility in shifting much of its work into the digital domain. We quickly set up regular video calls to create virtual bonds to alleviate isolation and help teams to collaborate productively. This summer’s Caux Forum online will also open up new opportunities for learning and for leading change.
