A Dialogue on the Meaning of Sustainability

Initiatives of Change Business & Economy Program

Friday, 12. November 2021 - 12:00 to 13:30

All sectors of society - governments, business, civil society, and the media - have critical roles to play in establishing a world in which every community is just, peaceful, and sustainable. Yet, do we as businesspeople have a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to make businesses, jobs, and lives sustainable? Can we share a common international vision of what is needed? Are we willing to undertake shared coherent actions?

Join the Initiatives of Change Business & Economy Program for a series of six interactive international seminars exploring the different facets of sustainability and how they integrate into the business sector. Each seminar will feature keynote speakers, open debate, and opportunity for exchange in small groups. Participate in an informative exchange of ideas for the purpose of inspired action!

Entrepreneurship for healthy food and regenerative agriculture

12 November, 12:00 - 13:30 GMT

Ruchi Jain started Taru Naturals 5 years ago. Her company now supports and trains over 10,000 tribal and small-scale farmers across India...

Ruchi JainMoved by her values, Ruchi Jain started her organic food business, Taru Naturals, in 2016 by selling jaggery (palm sugar). The company now manufactures and sells a variety of products like spices, nuts, seeds, oils, wheat flour, sourdough flour, black rice, etc. It buys its raw material from 10.000 small-scale farmers. It uses market intelligence to set up supply chains for market-ready fair-trade products. The products are manufactured in the company’s small plant in Mumbai with clean tech processing units. Taru Naturals encourages farmers to develop climate resilient agriculture, providing organic farming training, and also works on agroforestry and ecosystem restoration, encouraging farmers to grow fruit trees. 'My vision is to enable small-scale farmers to graduate to small business entrepreneurs,' says Ruchi Jain. Taru Naturals was among the 50 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) worldwide which received the 'Best Small Businesses' award in the 'Good Food for All' competition held in conjunction with the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit.

After Ruchi Jain's presentation, there will be ample time for an open sharing of ideas and experiences between participants as well as with the speaker. The session will last 90 minutes, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. GMT (check your local time difference here).

This meeting is part of Initiatives of Change Business & Economy programme series on the Meaning of Sustainability which has been running monthly since January 2021 (find us on YouTube). This is part of a series of 3 on Entrepreneurs Who Address Key Economic, Environmental and Social Challenges.
