Whom do we call an ethical leader?

Participants of the Ethical Leadership Workshop held for representatives of youth organisations, groups and social movements in Briukhovychi in May, debated the question: 'Whom do we call an ethical leader'.

Over seven days the participants were given the opportunity to discuss such important issues as leadership, the individual, ethics, motivation, life values, society, changes and future. In the evenings participants were able to watch thematic movies, share their life stories, show their talents, play games or simply take a walk, enjoying beautiful scenery.

The first day was devoted to participants' stories about their experience in volunteer projects, movements and social organisations. Learning such themes as leadership and ethics was an interesting task but at the same time not an easy one, as everyone had a different point of view.

Charisma, flexibility, tolerance, adaptability, the ability to motivate others, trust, morality, strong energy were found to be the main features of an ethical leader's character.

People should also have motivation, a desire to make their dreams come true. The team defined such motives as fear, hope, duties and dreams. The participants moved from the topic motivation to the topic values. The facilitators help participants to examine their own values.

The game 'Red and Blue' The most productive exercise for the development of efficient young people's partnership. The author of this game is Robert Axelrod, of Yale University. It addresses team work, strategy 'win-win', communication, the ways of making decisions and the values of the participants.

The participants studied a method of non-violent communication developed by American psychologist Marshall Rosenberg. It helps people to share the information which is necessary for solving conflicts and disputes. The method consists of four phases:

  1. non-judgemental observation;
  2. the expression of emotions;
  3. the definition of needs;
  4. the request to implement needs.

This model of communication can be used for solving different problems such as family misunderstandings, the conflict of ambitions and even political disputes.

The workshop helped participants to understand themselves and other people better, improve their leadership potential, and learn how to make the most of team work. The participants had an opportunity to find out about their real life values, see what real trust means, share their own experience, express their thoughts and listen to the ideas of others.

The workshop was held as a part of the programme 'Ukrainian action: healing the past', led by the international organisation Freedom INGO. The partners were The Institution of Management and Leadership of Ukrainian Catholic University with the support of Irene Prestwich Trust (UK) and The Foundation Ukrainian and Polish Cooperation PAUCI. The workshop facilitators were: Anzhela Starovoitova, Pavlo Kozeletskyi and Anastasiia Sachko.The organisation of participants was provided by coordinator Oleksa Stasevych.

In hot pursuit...

This workshop turned out to be a dumbfounding week for me. It was full of emotions, new knowledge and acquaintance. The facilitators are three totally different people, who complement each other perfectly. They managed to make me realize some moments which I have been rejecting for so long. :-)))

I am very grateful for the amazing atmosphere, getting new knowledge, experiencing new emotions, new people who turned out to become part of my life. I didn’t want to go home. I had a great desire to make this workshop last at least twice longer!

This workshop helped me to improve my leadership skills by means of practice, become more confident, and understand which kind of person the ethical leader should be and how important it is to be ethical nowadays. The leader is a person, who makes others follow her/him. The leader just keeps going ahead, inspiring others with his/her own example. You can become a leader only when you are truly respected. The leadership is the expression of inner person's power, her/his confidence.

The ethical leader is responsible, because he\she understands what his actions mean for other people and the whole world. Such leader not only makes people follow him/her, but also holds ethical values. He\she is tolerant towards those, who surrounds him/her, and motivated by altruism.

One of the leaders of national movement for independence in India Mahatma Gandhi said: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” “What is possible for one person, it is possible for everyone”. So we must not wait for changes, we have to make these changes! Moreover, everyone has a unique opportunity to start doing it!
